What to do After an Accident
The Highway Traffic Act requires that all collisions, where persons are injured, or damage is valued at more than $1000 (to vehicle, personal property, or highway property) must be reported to police forthwith.
A Police Officer must attend under any of the following circumstances, without exception:
- Collisions involving injury or death
- Criminal activity involved in collision (such as impaired driving or a stolen car)
- Collisions involving Federal, Provincial, or Municipal vehicles (such as T.T.C. bus or streetcar)
- Collisions involving vehicles transporting dangerous goods (such as chemicals)
- Collisions involving a person who is uninsured or is a suspended driver
- Collisions involving damage to private, municipal or highway property
- Collisions involving bicycles or pedestrians
- Third party refuses to provide required information
Once You’ve Had An Accident, the following actions should be taken before attending a Collision Reporting Centre (CRC):
- If it's not serious, no one is hurt and there are no safety issues, get the cars off the road
- Call police to ensure their presence isn't necessary, they will be able to tell you the location of your nearest collision centre
- Exchange information with anyone involved. Be sure to get their name, phone number, license information and the name of their insurance company (you can download Third Party Collision Checklist from our site)
- Take pictures! Carry a disposable camera in your car or use your camera phone if possible.
- Approach a witness to the accident and ask for their details should a statement be necessary.
Report to a collision reporting centre within 24 hours, with any documentation you may need. Remember that by law a towed car must be taken to a collision reporting centre.
